Living In Pain

THE WORLD AT LARGE is beginning to feel Cedric Dean's pain. Like many misguided youth, Cedric loved the streets unconditionally. In 1995, just 22 years old, he was sentenced to life without parole for dealing drugs. However, on 9/17/09, pursuant to an order from a U.S. District Court Judge in relation to changes in the crack cocaine sentencing guidelines, his Life sentence was reduced to 35 years. Once pending legislation to eliminate the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine is passed through Congress, he will receive immediate release.
Almost over fifteen years later, he's teaching real life gangsters how to be gentlemen and live more meaningful lives. Daily, he teaches fellow prisoners how to read and write. In addition to teaching Creative Writing and GED classes his other accomplishments include: acting as Intramural Basketball Commissioner, Chairman of NAACP Prison Branch 5135, Community Connections Committee, and the Executive Director of NAACP Prison Branch 5135. He has also coordinated Unity Day programs, youth development workshops, Gospel fests and Juneteenth Celebration programs. In 2005, he appeared in the "Written Word" before the House Judiciary Chairman, John Conyers with a prison freedom initiative designed to bring back federal parole.
When he is not helping prisoners better prepare themselves for society, Cedric writes emotionally enriching literature that shows gangsters and thugs how much of a mistake it is not to learn from his mistakes.

Everyday he asks God to make him a better man than he was before. God's love has enabled him to be able to achieve. His favorite scripture for inspiration is Psalms 37:24 - "the steps of good men are directed by the Lord. He delights in each step they take. If they fall, it isn't fatal, for the Lord holds them with His hand.
Too often people who know him least are judgmental about his wretched past. As a lifer, his testament to rehabilitation has been faced at times with deprecation and disapproval. Thankfully for him, the forgiving God to whom he serves has redeemed him; resurrected him from a mental and metaphysical recess.
Recently, Cedric has begun work on a new organization called S.A.V.E. which stands for: Sons Against Violence Everywhere. (Click here for more information on S.A.V.E.)

Miracles Do Happen
On 9-17-09, pursuant to an order from a U.S. District Court Judge, my Life sentence was reduced to 420 months. God's light miraculously illuminated the darkness of my future. He blessed me with a second chance. But that was only the beginning.
On 10-15-09, Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL), joined by Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Crime and Drugs Subcommittee Chairman Arlen Specter (D-PA), and seven other Senators, introduced legislation to eliminate the sentencing disparity between crack and powser cocaine. "Drug use is a serious problem in America and we need tough legislation to combat it. But in addition to being tough, our drug laws must be smart and fair. our current cocaine laws are not,' Durbin said. "The sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine has contributed to the imprisonment of African Americans at six times the rate of whites and to the United State's position as the world's leader in incarcerations. Congress has talked about addressing this injustice for long enough; it's time for us to act."
Once signed into law, Senator Durbin's legislation will rectify a 20-year old "mistake" on cocaine penalties and make way for my immediate release.
"Today, the criminal justice system has unfair and biased cocaine penalties that undermine the Constitution's promise of equal treatment for all Americans. To have faith in our system Americans must have confidence that the laws of this country, including our drug laws, are fair and administered fairly," Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said. "I believe the Fair Sentencing Act will move us one step closer to reaching that goal. I commend Senator Durbin for his leadership in fixing this decades-old injustice. We should do what we can to restore public confidence inour criminal justice system. Correcting biases in our criminal sentencing laws is a step in that direction."
I am looking forward to continuing my efforts to transform gangsters into gentlemen upon my release. My non-profit organization: Sons Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E.) will earnestly and eagerly address the core causes of the record levels of incarceration in our country.
I want to thank all of my supporters for everything they have done to help secure my release. You are forever appreciated.
